    The Reality: Many professional developers (including myself) switched FROM Cursor TO Claude Code despite the higher costs and learning curve. Why? Because Claude Code is simply more powerful when properly configured.

    • Time: 35 minutes with minimal guidance
    • Production Ready: Yes (after standard review)

    Winner: Claude Code decisively

    Why It Matters: Production code needs to be correct, not just fast. Claude Code got it right.

    2. Debugging a Production Memory Leak

    Task: Debug and fix a Node.js service with mysterious memory leak causing crashes after 6-8 hours.

    Cursor 2.0:

    • Needed specific direction to problematic code
    • Found obvious issues (unclosed connections)
    • Missed the actual cause (event listener accumulation in recursive function)

    Cursor: Predictable but Limited

    Cost: $20/month flat rate

    Sounds Great, But:

    • You get what you pay for
    • Speed doesn't equal value
    • Fixing bugs from fast suggestions wastes time
    • Second-guessing AI costs mental energy

    When It Makes Sense:

    • You're not a full-time developer
    • Working on simpler projects
    • Budget is a hard constraint
    • Speed matters more than depth

    The Professional's Calculation

    Question: Would you rather pay:

    • $20/month for fast suggestions you need to verify
    • $100/month for trusted suggestions you can ship

    For professional developers shipping production code:

    • Time saved debugging > cost difference
    • Confidence in suggestions > speed of generation
    • Fewer production bugs > faster autocomplete

    My Decision: $100/month Claude Code is cheaper than the time I'd waste verifying and fixing Cursor's fast but shallower suggestions.

    Limitations:

    When Cursor Still Makes Sense

    To be fair, Cursor isn't bad—it's just optimized for different use cases:

    My Personal Recommendation

    After three months using both extensively:

    For production systems: Claude Code is worth every penny of the $100-200/month. The quality, trust, and reasoning capabilities are in a different league.

    For everything else: Cursor is fine for prototypes and simple projects.

    The kicker: I switched from Cursor to Claude Code and immediately became more productive despite the learning curve. That tells you everything.
