n8n is Now an AI-First Platform: 75% of Users Build AI Workflows

When n8n launched in 2019, it was a scrappy open-source alternative to Zapier. Six years later, it's become something entirely different: an AI orchestration platform with a $2.5 billion valuation and NVIDIA as an investor.

The most telling statistic? 75% of n8n customers now use AI tools in their workflows. This isn't a pivot—it's a transformation driven by users who discovered that n8n's flexibility made it the perfect foundation for AI automation.

From Workflow Tool to AI Platform

The shift didn't happen overnight. n8n built its reputation on being the "fair-code" automation platform—open source for personal use, with a commercial license for businesses. Developers loved it because they could self-host, write custom JavaScript, and connect to any API without paying per-execution fees.

Then the AI wave hit, and n8n was uniquely positioned to ride it.

While Zapier and Make scrambled to add AI features on top of their existing architectures, n8n went deeper. They integrated LangChain directly into the platform, adding nearly 70 AI-specific nodes that let users build sophisticated agent workflows visually.

The result: n8n became the middleware that connects AI to everything else.

What 70 AI Nodes Actually Means

Most automation platforms offer basic AI features—summarize text, classify data, maybe generate an image. n8n offers an entire AI development environment:

    LLM Integrations:

    • OpenAI (GPT-4o, GPT-4.1)
    • Anthropic Claude
    • Google Gemini
    • Azure OpenAI
    • Hugging Face
    • Local models via Ollama

    Agent Architecture:

    • AI Agent nodes for autonomous workflows
    • Multi-agent systems with orchestrator patterns
    • Memory management (buffer, session-based)
    • Tool nodes that let agents take actions

    RAG Infrastructure:

    • Vector store integrations (Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate)
    • Document loaders and text splitters
    • Embedding models
    • Retrieval chains

    Specialized Tools:

    • MCP Client Node (new in late 2025)
    • SQL agents for natural language database queries
    • Code execution nodes for custom LangChain logic

This isn't "AI-assisted automation." It's a full-stack AI development platform that happens to have 500+ traditional integrations built in.

Why Technical Users Choose n8n for AI

The 75% adoption rate isn't random. Technical users building AI workflows face specific challenges that n8n solves better than alternatives.

    Cost Structure

Zapier and Make charge per step or task. A 15-step workflow costs 15x more than a single-step one. For AI workflows—which often involve multiple LLM calls, data transformations, and API requests—this adds up fast.

n8n Cloud charges per execution regardless of steps. Self-hosted n8n costs nothing beyond server fees. When you're iterating on AI agents that might run hundreds of test executions, this difference is massive.

Real numbers: 100K tasks costs ~$734/month on Zapier. On n8n Cloud, it's ~$24/month. Self-hosted? Just your server costs.

    Flexibility for Complex AI Logic

AI workflows aren't linear. You need:

    • Conditional branching based on LLM outputs
    • Retry logic for rate limits and failures
    • Memory that persists across conversations
    • Custom code for edge cases

n8n handles all of this natively. The LangChain Code Node gives you full access to the LangChain library when the visual interface isn't enough. You can mix drag-and-drop simplicity with Python-level customization in the same workflow.

    Data Privacy

If you're building AI workflows with sensitive data—customer information, financial records, proprietary documents—sending everything through a third-party cloud is a non-starter.

Self-hosted n8n means your data never leaves your infrastructure. Your embeddings, your vector stores, your LLM calls—all running on servers you control.

    The NVIDIA Signal

In October 2025, n8n raised $180 million at a $2.5 billion valuation. The investor list tells the story: NVIDIA's venture arm (NVentures) participated alongside Accel, Sequoia, and Felicis.

NVIDIA doesn't invest in workflow automation tools. They invest in AI infrastructure. Their participation signals that n8n is now classified as core AI tooling, not a Zapier competitor.

    This matters for two reasons:

    1. Validation: The company best positioned to understand AI infrastructure sees n8n as strategically important
    2. Direction: Expect n8n's AI capabilities to deepen significantly with this backing

    What Users Are Actually Building

The 75% statistic becomes concrete when you look at real use cases:

AI-Powered Customer Support: Multi-agent systems where a router agent classifies incoming requests and delegates to specialized agents for billing, technical support, or sales inquiries. Memory persists across the conversation, and agents can take actions like updating databases or creating tickets.

Document Processing Pipelines: Upload a contract, extract key terms with an LLM, store embeddings for semantic search, and route to appropriate teams based on content. All automated, all auditable.

Internal Knowledge Bases: RAG systems that let employees query company documentation in natural language. n8n handles the ingestion, chunking, embedding, storage, and retrieval—no separate vector database setup required.

Autonomous Research Agents: Agents that take a topic, search the web, synthesize findings, and produce structured reports. The SQL Agent pattern lets these workflows query databases directly using natural language.

    The Technical User Advantage

Here's the uncomfortable truth about AI automation in 2025: the platforms optimized for non-technical users can't handle the complexity that real AI workflows require.

Zapier's AI features are essentially pre-built actions—useful for simple tasks, but limited. Make offers more flexibility but still constrains what's possible. n8n gives you the building blocks to construct whatever you need.

    This creates a clear segmentation:

    ScenarioBest Choice
Simple AI additions to existing workflowsZapier
Visual AI workflows with moderate complexityMake
Custom AI agents, RAG systems, multi-agent architecturesn8n

If you're reading this blog, you're probably in the third category.

    Getting Started with n8n AI

If you haven't explored n8n's AI capabilities yet, here's a practical path:

    1. Try n8n Cloud free tier (200 executions/month) to experiment without setup
    2. Import an AI template from n8n.io/workflows—there are hundreds of AI-specific ones
    3. Build a simple RAG workflow: Document → Embeddings → Vector Store → Query Interface
    4. Graduate to agents once you understand the node patterns

For production workloads, self-hosting removes execution limits and keeps data private. The setup takes 30-60 minutes with Docker.

    What's Next

n8n's 2025 roadmap includes Evaluations—a testing framework for AI workflows. This addresses one of the hardest problems in AI development: verifying that your agents still work correctly after you change them.

They're also building toward CI/CD integration, which would let you version-control and automatically test AI workflows the same way you handle traditional code.

Combined with the recent v2.0 release focusing on security and enterprise features, n8n is clearly positioning itself as the serious platform for serious AI work.

    The Bottom Line

n8n didn't become an AI-first platform through marketing—it happened because technical users building AI workflows kept choosing it over alternatives. The 75% adoption rate is user-driven validation.

If you're building AI automations and haven't looked at n8n recently, it's time to revisit. The platform that was "Zapier but open source" is now "the AI orchestration layer that also does traditional automation."

That's a significant evolution, and it explains the $2.5 billion valuation.
