iOS 27 could turn the iPhone into an AI model selector
Apple appears to be preparing a major shift for iOS 27: letting users choose which AI model they want to use inside system features like Siri, Writing Tools, or Image Playground.
The news, originally reported by Bloomberg and later picked up by TechCrunch, Reuters, Engadget, and Mashable, says Apple is testing an internal feature called Extensions. The idea is that apps installed on the device could offer their generative AI capabilities to Apple Intelligence, so users can choose between third-party models like Google Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, or potentially ChatGPT.
The easy angle is: “Apple was late to the AI race and now needs help.” That is partly true, but it misses the bigger point.
The more interesting angle is this: Apple could turn the iPhone into a distribution layer for AI models. Not another chatbot. Not another standalone app. An operating-system layer where different models compete on specific tasks.
For users, that means more choice. For developers, it means a new integration surface. For entrepreneurs, it means the question shifts from “which AI app should I use?” to “which model is best for each task inside the actual workflow?”
What Apple is preparing for iOS 27
According to Bloomberg's report cited by TechCrunch, Apple plans to let users choose between multiple external models to power Apple Intelligence features. The feature would be available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
Text seen in test builds reportedly describes Extensions as a way to “access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features like Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and more.”
The key phrase is from installed apps.
That suggests Apple is not only thinking about a cloud-provider picker. It is thinking about an architecture where an installed app can expose capabilities to the system. If an AI company supports that integration from its app, its models could become available inside native system tools.
Engadget frames the move as an options strategy: Apple would not try to compete head-on with every AI lab by building the one winning model, but would instead offer a layer where the user can choose. Mashable adds that companies like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic could participate if they enable support in their apps.
There is still uncertainty. It is not clear which models will be available at launch, how user consent will work, what data will be shared with each provider, whether selection will happen per task or through a single default model, or what limits Apple will impose on apps that want to integrate.
But the strategic direction is clear enough: Apple wants Apple Intelligence to be less of a single model and more of an access interface for models.
Why this matters beyond “Siri with another chatbot”
Siri has spent years promising more than it delivers. So many people will read this news as another attempt to fix Siri with external models.
But if Apple executes the idea well, the change is not limited to the voice assistant.
Apple's strength is not having the best chatbot in the world. It is controlling the full experience: device, operating system, permissions, apps, notifications, files, camera, calendar, messages, email, photos, and payments. When a model enters that environment, it stops being a web page where you ask questions and becomes a layer that can operate close to the user's real context.
That is the jump.
Today, if you want to use AI for a task, you usually open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity, copy context, explain what you want, and then go back to the original app to execute. It is powerful, but fragmented.
The promise of Apple Intelligence was always to reduce that friction: AI where you already work. The problem is that Apple did not have, or did not show, models competitive enough to carry that promise on its own.
With Extensions, Apple could accept a market reality: it does not need to win every benchmark. It can win the access point.
Instead of the user going to the model, the model comes to the operating system.
The single-model mindset is losing power
During 2023 and 2024, many companies treated AI as a vendor decision: “we are going with OpenAI,” “we are going with Anthropic,” “we are going with Google.” But the market is moving toward something more modular.
One model may be better for writing. Another may be better at reasoning through code. Another may be cheaper. Another may run locally. Another may integrate better with documents, voice, or images. Another may have a privacy policy better suited to specific types of data.
In practice, teams are already using AI in a multi-model way, even if they do not always call it that. They use Claude for drafting and analysis, GPT for specific tool workflows, Gemini for long context or Google integration, local models for privacy, and specialized APIs for transcription, vision, or extraction.
What Apple may be doing with iOS 27 is bringing that logic to the end user.
Not every job needs the same engine. Rewriting an email is one thing. Summarizing a meeting is another. Generating an image is another. Asking Siri to execute an action inside an app is another. Analyzing a private photo is another. Automating a workflow across calendar, WhatsApp, notes, and email is another.
If the system lets users choose models, competition moves from “who has the most visible app?” to “who solves this task best inside the user's context?”
That changes the terrain for everyone.
What this means for entrepreneurs and small teams
For entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and small teams, the news has three practical implications.
First: AI distribution will move closer to the operating system.
Until now, many AI startups competed for attention as an app, browser extension, or SaaS product. But if Apple opens Apple Intelligence to models and capabilities from installed apps, some of the value can move into the system. The user does not want to open ten tools. The user wants the task solved where they already are.
That does not mean every AI app dies. It means the product has to think less in terms of “our own screen” and more in terms of “integrable capability.”
Second: trust and permissions will become part of the product.
Apple has built its AI narrative around privacy, on-device processing, and Private Cloud Compute. In its privacy documentation, Apple explains that Apple Intelligence tries to process requests on device when it can, and when it needs larger models, it can send only the relevant information to Apple servers designed not to store user data.
If third-party models enter the flow, the trust question becomes more important. What data leaves the device? Which provider processes the request? Is the prompt stored? Is it used for training? Can the user understand the exchange?
For any company building with AI, this reinforces one idea: privacy, permissions, and clarity are not legal details at the end of the funnel. They are part of the UX.
Third: multi-model workflows will become normal.
An entrepreneur using AI to run a business should not think about “my favorite model” like a religion. They should think in terms of a stack: which model to use for strategy, which for support, which for writing, which for data analysis, which for sensitive automations, which can run locally, and which makes sense on cost.
If Apple normalizes that choice on the iPhone, the market educates itself. People start to understand that models are interchangeable engines, not final destinations.
The opportunity for developers: not just apps, capabilities
There is another important point: Apple has already been pushing developers toward deeper system integrations through App Intents.
Apple's documentation describes App Intents as a way to make an app's content and actions discoverable by system experiences like Spotlight, widgets, Shortcuts, and Siri. It also has specific documentation on integrating actions with Siri and Apple Intelligence through intents, entities, and compatible schemas.
If we combine that direction with Extensions, an interesting thesis appears: useful apps will not only be the ones with a good interface, but the ones that expose clear actions the system and agents can execute.
Simple examples:
- an invoicing app that exposes “create invoice for this client”;
- a CRM that exposes “summarize history and prepare follow-up”;
- a task app that exposes “turn this conversation into next steps”;
- an e-commerce tool that exposes “review delayed orders and suggest a reply”;
- a notes app that exposes “find previous decisions about this project.”
When AI lives in the system, apps need to become actionable. It is not enough to store data. They have to offer operations an assistant can understand, request permission for, and execute.
That is a major shift for small B2B products. The advantage will not just be having “AI built in,” but designing exactly what actions AI can take inside the product.
The risk: more choice can also create more confusion
Not everything is positive.
A model selector can be powerful for advanced users, but confusing for normal users. Most people do not want to choose between Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and a local model before rewriting an email. They want it to work.
Apple will have to solve the balance between control and simplicity. There will probably be a default model, recommendations by task type, clear permissions, and confirmations when the system sends data to an external provider.
There is also a risk for developers: depending too heavily on an integration controlled by Apple. If Apple defines which capabilities can be exposed, how they are approved, what experience the user gets, and which models appear first, the ecosystem can become powerful but closed.
For startups, the lesson is obvious: use platforms, but do not build all your differentiation on a surface you do not control.
The strategic read
Apple does not need to be OpenAI to win in AI. It needs to make AI useful inside its devices.
That has always been its pattern. Apple did not invent the MP3 player, but it made the iPod the dominant experience. It did not invent the smartphone, but it turned the iPhone into the central interface of digital life. It did not invent apps, but it created a store and distribution model that changed software.
With AI, it can attempt something similar: not necessarily being the best model lab, but being the layer where the user decides which intelligence to use and where that intelligence can act.
If iOS 27 really lets users choose third-party models in Apple Intelligence, the question will not only be whether Siri gets better. The question will be whether the iPhone becomes the user's personal AI router.
And if that happens, the opportunity for entrepreneurs is not launching another generic chatbot. It is building specific, reliable, integrable capabilities that can live inside the workflows where the user already works.

If you build AI products, automations, or services, this news leaves a clear checklist:
- Design your tools as capabilities, not just screens.
- Think about which actions an agent should be able to execute with user permission.
- Document what data each workflow needs and why.
- Evaluate models by task: cost, quality, privacy, latency, and context.
- Do not depend on a single provider if your critical operation needs resilience.
- Prepare your product for a world where the user expects to change models without changing workflow.
Mobile AI will not just be “a chatbot in your pocket.” It will be a decision and action layer inside the user's most important device.
If Apple opens that layer, even in a limited way, the message to the market is clear: the future is not one AI. It is a system where many intelligences compete to help you at the exact right moment.
